Today’s reading: John 5:1-6:24
My selection: John 5:22-24
22 The Father judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son, 23 that all may honor the Son, just as they honor the Father. Whoever does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
My reflections: The Gospel of John is rich in information about the Trinity. In this section we get important insight into the relationship between God the Father and God the Son, Jesus Himself. In verses 19-21, Jesus describes His dependence on the Father, His unity of action with the Father, and the bond of love between Him and the Father.
In my selection, Jesus states further aspects of the Father-Son relationship related to the eternal destiny of mankind:
1. All judgment has been delegated to the Son in order that the Son be given the same honor as the Father. Here Unitarians, Mormons, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Oneness Pentecostals and others err.
2. Deliverance from judgment and the receiving of eternal life depends on hearing the word of Jesus and believing the “One who sent” Him, that is, the Father.
My challenge: The message of the gospel is clear and simple. Believe who Jesus is and what He says and you will be saved. Reject Him and His words and you can expect judgment ahead. There is a sure way of salvation, not by works but by faith. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us (1:14). Do you believe Him? Hold to Him and to His promises today and all the way to the end of this life until you enter His presence. Nothing else matters, really. Flee the wrath of God and the judgment of the Son by fleeing to the Son who will save all who come to Him and judge those who will not.
