Today’s reading: Job 26:1-31:40
My selection: Job 26:14
14 Behold, these are but the outskirts of his ways,
and how small a whisper do we hear of him!
But the thunder of his power who can understand?
My reflections: So far in the dialogue, there has been no end of complaining and questioning God on Job’s part. That is understandable, but fruitless. There has been no end of accusing Job and defending God on the part of his three friends. That is also understandable, though riddled with error.
Now Job begins to focus on the greatness of God. He is powerful and sovereign over creation. He has understanding, but we cannot understand Him. We only see the outskirts of His ways. We get a whisper from Him, but His power thunders and we don’t understand it.
Job is beginning to head in the right direction. He is heading the conversation toward the fear of the Lord which is where we must always start if we would gain wisdom. The fear of the Lord is wisdom, he says in Job 28:28.
Job is beginning to say with Paul:
Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! Romans 11:33
My challenge: If you need wisdom today, begin by recognizing the awesome (worthy of fear) God who rules the universe. Proclaim His greatness. Accept His right not to reveal all His judgments to you. Be at peace that all is well in heaven and He will make all things well for His people.
Tomorrow’s reading: Job 32:1-37:24
