Today’s reading: Isaiah 31:1-35:10
My selection: Isaiah 32:5-8
5 The fool will no more be called noble,
nor the scoundrel said to be honorable.
6 For the fool speaks folly,
and his heart is busy with iniquity,
to practice ungodliness,
to utter error concerning the Lord,
to leave the craving of the hungry unsatisfied,
and to deprive the thirsty of drink.
7 As for the scoundrel—his devices are evil;
he plans wicked schemes
to ruin the poor with lying words,
even when the plea of the needy is right.
8 But he who is noble plans noble things,
and on noble things he stands.
My reflections: Here is a picture of the kingdom to come, in which fools and scoundrels are shown up for what they are and the nobleman is honored. One of the characteristics of the fool is that his heart is busy “to utter error concerning the Lord.” He thinks himself to be a wise and accurate theologian, but instead he speaks folly, including folly about God. What a dangerous person is the fool! He misleads about things that matter, that is, about God, His word, and His truth. The fool is a blind man giving directions to other blind men. All who follow the fool go over the cliff.
The scoundrel, if anything, is worse. His intentions are destruction. He knows that he is bringing destruction on others with his schemes and injustice. In that future kingdom, the fools and scoundrels will no longer be honored and respected. The true nobility will reign.
My challenge: If you are a believer, are you careful to be sure your theology is accurate according to Scripture? Do not be a deluded fool or an evil schemer. Beware of following such. Seek to know, believe, and teach accurately the Word of God, the truth about God, and the promises and commands of God.
