Today’s reading: Hebrews 1:1-6:12
My selection: Hebrews 2:14-15
Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
My reflections: The writer of Hebrews is carefully laying out a case for the superiority of Jesus over angels, Moses, and Aaron. The salvation which Jesus accomplished for His people is great (2:2-3).
What is so great about this salvation?
First, in this salvation, Jesus destroyed the devil, the one who has the power of death. If you trust in Jesus for salvation, do not fear the devil. Though he continues to exercise dying powers, his final destruction has been assured through Christ.
Second, in this salvation, Jesus delivered all those who through fear of death were enslaved their entire lives. If you trust in Jesus for salvation, do not fear death. The power of death has been destroyed along with the one who had that power, the devil.
My challenge: Death and the devil are real threats to all those who are strangers to the salvation of Christ. If you know Him as Savior, rejoice in the great salvation which Jesus Christ achieved for His people. Never stop being amazed by it. Death has no power to paralyze with fear you who believe in Him. That is a great salvation, the greatest salvation!
