Today’s reading: Psalm 36:1-39:13

My selection: Psalm 38:1-2

1 O Lord, rebuke me not in your anger,

nor discipline me in your wrath!

2 For your arrows have sunk into me,

and your hand has come down on me.

My reflections: David is in agony. He is sick and overwhelmed with grief, but he does not ask “why?” He knows why.

He has sinned. God is disciplining him for his sin. David acknowledges his iniquity. He understands the Lord’s indignation. He does not shift the blame. He does not make excuses. He asks for mercy. He does not resent or resist the Lord’s discipline. He merely asks that the full weight of God’s just anger and wrath not come down upon him.

The godly man or woman receives the discipline of God. He does not waste time looking for excuses and scapegoats. He seeks the mercy and grace of the One who has sent the discipline.

Hebrews 12:5-11 reminds us that painful discipline from the Lord shows that He is treating us as sons (or daughters). His correction proves His love because although He receives us as we are He does not leave us as we were.

My challenge: Has God’s hand been heavy upon you? Give thanks for His love. Confess known sin. Seek His wisdom to understand the intent of His discipline.

Tomorrow’s reading: Psalm 40:1-45:17
