God’s Timing

Today’s reading: Matthew 25:1-26:35

My selection: Matthew 26:3-5

3 Then the chief priests and the elders of the people gathered in the palace of the high priest, whose name was Caiaphas, 4 and plotted together in order to arrest Jesus by stealth and kill him. 5 But they said, “Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar among the people.”

My reflections: God is sovereign over every action of man, including the timing of that action. The plot to kill Jesus seemed foolproof. It was concocted by the chief priests and the elders in the palace of the high priest, Caiaphas. There was no higher human authority among the Jews who could veto the plan. They agreed to do it AFTER the Passover. But God had decreed that it would be during the Passover, to make the point that Jesus was the Passover Lamb whose blood would cover the people and save them from death (I Corinthians 5:7).

The crucifixion was carried out by human means but with God’s providence and sovereignty. The leaders couldn’t put Jesus to death when they wanted to and when they wanted to delay the death they were overruled by God and carried it out.

My challenge: All things are in God’s timing. He is wise and sovereign. He rules over all people and all actions, including you. Trust Him. You are in His hand. Trust the Passover Lamb, Jesus Christ, who saves His people from death.

Tomorrow’s reading: Matthew 26:36-27:44
