Hearing Before Doing

Today’s reading: Matthew 16:1-18:35

My selection: Matthew 17:5-8

5 He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” 8 And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only.

My reflections: Once again, Peter, James, and John receive powerful evidence of the deity of their Master. Peter’s nervous reaction turns to terror when he hears a voice from the cloud. Suddenly, he and his fellow disciples realize that, besides Jesus, Moses, and Elijah, God is present with them testifying to Jesus as His beloved Son, with whom He is well pleased. “Listen to Him”, they hear.

Peter was eager to DO something for Jesus, but before doing something for Him, Peter needs to listen to Him. Jesus is not one among equals with Moses and Elijah. He is God’s Son. Peter still hadn’t quite gotten that.

My challenge: Are you a lot like Peter? Your motto is “don’t just stand there, do something”? Our first task is to hear Jesus. Know who He is. Know what He has said. Then act in obedience to Him.

Tomorrow’s reading: Matthew 19:1-21:22
