Today’s reading: Matthew 27:45-Mark 1:45
My selection: Matthew 28:8-10
8 So they departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 And behold, Jesus met them and said, “Greetings!” And they came up and took hold of his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee, and there they will see me.”
My reflections: The resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead is the greatest proof of His deity and of His authority to save His people from their sin. Death is a universal experience. That is undeniable. It is the great problem of mankind. Individually and collectively, we cannot permanently postpone our date with death. Here is the one hope for humanity. Someone who claims to be the Son of God, God Incarnate, has come into the world, lived, died, and risen from death and tells us that there is an answer, a solution to our mortality in Him.
The religious and political authorities of the day colluded in an attempt to paint the resurrection as a hoax. Why did they want to take away the one solid hope that death could be overcome? Was it not to avoid the implications of having to admit that Jesus was who He said He was? Why is so much ink spilled to this day to attempt to show that Jesus was a mere man and did not rise from the dead? If it can be shown that Jesus is not God, that He did not rise from the grave, then His teachings, claims, and commands may be dismissed with no further thought.
My challenge: Can you sing the old hymn in sincerity:
“My hope is built on nothing less
Than Jesus blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.
On Christ the Solid Rock, I stand
All other ground is sinking sand,
All other ground is sinking sand”
Tomorrow’s reading: Mark 2:1-4:20
