Today’s reading: Matthew 26:36-27:44
My selection: Matthew 27:17-19
17 So when they had gathered, Pilate said to them, “Whom do you want me to release for you: Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?” 18 For he knew that it was out of envy that they had delivered him up. 19 Besides, while he was sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, “Have nothing to do with that righteous man, for I have suffered much because of him today in a dream.”
My reflections: The whole episode of Jesus’ arrest and trial brought unspeakable anguish to several people. Judas was so distraught he returned the betrayal payment and hung himself. Peter, who had denied Jesus as predicted, was overcome with grief. Pilate’s wife was sleepless and tried to keep her husband from getting involved in the scheme. Pilate repeatedly tried to find a way to free Jesus.
Meanwhile the crowds, incited by the chief priests and elders, grew adamant and callous in their attitude, even saying to Pilate, “His blood be on us and on our children!”
My challenge: One’s response to Jesus Christ was then and is now the most pivotal issue in all of life. To reject Him is disaster. As Jesus told them:
43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits. 44 And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and when it falls on anyone, it will crush him.” Matthew 21:43-44
What is your response to Jesus? His blood saves those who trust in Him but condemns those who consider Him worthy of death. Believe in Him. May His blood cover your sins.
