Today’s reading: Leviticus 5:14-7:38
My selection: Leviticus 5:17
“If anyone sins, doing any of the things that by the Lord’s commandments ought not to be done, though he did not know it, then realizes his guilt, he shall bear his iniquity.
Ignorance of the law is no excuse. This is, I believe, still held to in the legal system in the United States. Citizens are responsible to know the law. Immunity is not granted on the basis of ignorance, otherwise, there would be an incentive to be (or claim to be) ignorant.
Forgiveness is possible through offerings and restitution*. Offerings were made to the Lord and restitution was made to those who had been harmed by the sin. Sin committed always is an offense to God and often is toward others as well. Although it is costly and painful to confess sin and make offerings and restitution, what joy to be forgiven! Before God our sin is atoned for in Christ. Let us not take lightly our responsibility to confess our sin. Before man we need to make restitution appropriately.
My challenge: Can you say with Paul, ” So I always take pains to have a clear conscience toward both God and man? (Acts 24:16) Confess sin promptly. Make restitution fully. Keep your conscience clear.
* restitution is reparation made by giving an equivalent or compensation for loss, damage, or injury caused; indemnification.
