Today’s reading: Judges 1:1-3:30

And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.
My reflections: Once the elders had passed away, there was no one left who remembered the Red Sea or Mt. Sinai. The next generation had no personal knowledge of the LORD or what He had done. This did not mean they had no knowledge of their history. Perhaps they could recite it verbatim, but their knowledge was impersonal at best. Whatever the case, they did evil in the LORD’s sight, and they served the Baals. They did not fear God. They did not love God. They did not believe God.
Had the older generation failed to pass on the knowledge of God? Was the fault with the new generation who did not believe? Without a personal relationship with God by grace through faith, the family legacy is mere head knowledge: old, quaint, interesting, but irrelevant.
My challenge: Do you do your best to pass on the truth of the gospel to the next generation? Do you pray for them knowing that, apart from the grace of God, they will not believe? Do you trust God to work in those who come behind you?
Use every means to leave a gospel legacy to your children and grandchildren. Recognize that it is God who must call them to Himself, and you are not able or responsible to make them believe.
