Today’s reading: 1 Chronicles 6:1-7:5
My selection: I Chronicles 6:31-32
These are the men whom David put in charge of the service of song in the house of the Lord after the ark rested there. They ministered with song before the tabernacle of the tent of meeting until Solomon built the house of the Lord in Jerusalem, and they performed their service according to their order.
My reflections: Worship in ancient Israel under David was given high priority. This can be seen as there is a long list of men who were appointed for the “service of song” in the house of the Lord. This predated Solomon’s building of the temple.
I draw two conclusions from this section:
1. Music and song are an important part of the worship of Jehovah. This does not change with the New Testament. Some cross cultural missionaries have rejected the importing of foreign music and songs into new cultures but music and song, of some kind, is an essential part of worship.
2. Time and manpower must be given to the ministry of music for it to be worthy of a great and holy God.
When has there been great music in the Church? Here, I am speculating. There was a song written at the crossing of the Red Sea. There were great Psalms written by David and others who lived during the early days of the united kingdom of Israel. There was great music written during the Reformation. Today we have a large quantity of music being written in the contemporary Christian music industry. One wonders if this music has the quality of endurance.
My challenge:God is worthy of our best music. Use music to worship God, privately and publicly. If you are gifted in writing lyrics and music or performing music, use your gifts to the maximum for God’s glory. Take time to express appreciation to those who serve the Lord in the area of music.
