Today’s reading: Psalm 26:1-31:24

My selection: Psalm 27:4

One thing have I asked of the Lord,

that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord

all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord

and to inquire in his temple.

My reflections: If you could ask for one thing from the Lord, what would it be?

David asked to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple. While this sounds like several things, we should understand this to be one composite thing involving a lifestyle of worship and service to God.

David understood several important things in this prayer:

1. The presence of the Lord is a gift of His grace. David did not presume that God would grant him this desire, but asked for it.

2. The Lord is beautiful. To gaze upon Him is the most satisfying and awesome thing a human can experience.

3. Human nature is unstable without God’s help. David asked the Lord to grant him the grace to remain constant all the days of his life.

My challenge: The greatest thing in life is to know God, the essence of eternal life (John 17:3). Let it be your single overarching goal to the end.

Tomorrow’s reading: Psalm 32:1-35:28
