Today’s reading: Daniel 2:1-3:30

My selection: Daniel 2:17-20

17 Then Daniel went to his house and made the matter known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah, his companions, 18 and told them to seek mercy from the God of heaven concerning this mystery, so that Daniel and his companions might not be destroyed with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. 19 Then the mystery was revealed to Daniel in a vision of the night. Then Daniel blessed the God of heaven. 20 Daniel answered and said:

“ Blessed be the name of God forever and ever,to whom belong wisdom and might.

My reflections: As we saw yesterday, the key to Daniel’s success and wisdom before the court of Nebuchadnezzar was his knowledge of God’s word. In today’s reading, He is not merely faced with a difficult diplomatic challenge, but is faced with the threat of imminent execution. He does not become confused or irrational, but stays steady, no doubt, because he continues to trust the Lord. His prayer of thanks to God reveals a mind and heart deeply filled with truth from the Word of God which was available in ancient Israel: the Law, the Psalms and the historical books along with, perhaps, some of the prophets.

My challenge: There is no substitute for a knowledge of Scripture which holds us steady even when there is an impending crisis. In the Bible, we find the accurate source of God’s truth. Read it. Study it. Pray it. Apply it. You may be faced with a life and death situation in which you will need it.

Tomorrow’s reading: Daniel 4:1-6:28
