My selection: Proverbs 3:3-4
3 Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. 4 So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.
My reflections: The tone of Proverbs is that of warnings and promises. We are called to seek wisdom and to avoid folly. We are promised blessings if we do the former and consequences if we don’t do the latter. A good life is not that complicated, but neither is it easy. We forget the way of wisdom too often in the midst of pressure. Our default position as recovering sinners is that of going with the flow. It assures acceptance by society. It feels good to our flesh.
But for Christians, our goal is not acceptance by society or comfort for our flesh. Our goal is to glorify God. There is enjoyment in that goal, but we must first escape from the seduction of the world, the flesh, and the devil.
This is why we must resist the tendency to lose sight of steadfast love and faithfulness. These qualities have to be tied around our necks because they slip away from us when they are not. Yet when we do keep them with us, they result in favor and good success before God and man.
My prayer: May steadfast love and faithfulness be with you today. May you find favor with God and with the people who matter, those who also seek His favor.
