Responsible Care for Your Health

Today’s reading: Leviticus 11:1-13:46

My selection: Leviticus 11: 1-2 And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying to them, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel, saying, These are the living things that you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth.

My reflections: Here God through Moses gives His people laws concerning diet and health. Although it is a fallen world, there are better and worse ways to live and flourish. Certainly it is not wrong to be concerned about our health and well being in this world. This does not indicate a love for this world but a recognition that God has put us here for a time and that (as RC Sproul says) “right now counts forever”. Even the mundane matters such as nutrition, rest, exercise and preventive health care is important in our service to God and to one another.

I sometimes hear people say, “there’s no need to take care of your health because God is going to take you when your time is up.” The second part of the statement is true, but not the first. You will die at God’s appointed time, true. But you will almost certainly feel better and be more productive if you care for your body properly.

My challenge: Let us glorify God in how we care for our health and the health of our families. Let us show appreciation for those who prepare and serve healthful meals to us and to those who help us take care of our health. If you have a spouse, as I do, who encourages you to stay in good health by good nutrition and exercise be appreciative and do not resist that encouragement.

Tomorrow’s reading: Leviticus 13:47-14:57
