Today’s reading: Leviticus 21:1-23:25
My selection: Leviticus 23:1
The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, These are the appointed feasts of the Lord that you shall proclaim as holy convocations; they are my appointed feasts.
My reflections: Here is a summary of the feasts that God prescribed to Israel. Is it not interesting that these were commanded, not optional? We know that Israel neglected them to their own detriment and would bring judgment on their nation for that neglect. In other words, although you would think feasts and days of rest would be anticipated they were not, at least not consistently. It seems that they learned quickly that by neglecting their Sabbaths and Passovers they could squeeze out more time to make money.
God knew that they would not worship, rest, and celebrate without making it a matter of law.
My challenge: This chapter also reminds us that there is to be a weekly and annual flow to life with feasts to commemorate historic events, including God’s interventions in history and His creation. We do well to keep the Sabbath and to allow time for the Lord weekly and on special annual occasions. Rest, Worship. Celebrate. Do not feel guilty about resting. Feel guilty for not resting.
