Today’s reading: Job 38:1-41:34
My selection: Job 40:3-5
3 Then Job answered the Lord and said:
4 “ Behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you?
I lay my hand on my mouth.
5 I have spoken once, and I will not answer; twice, but I will proceed no further.”
My reflections: Job had lost everything in this world except one thing, his pride. There was still an element of egotism in Job that was not revealed and removed until God confronted him. It may seem that God is surprisingly stern with Job who has suffered so much but God knows man and knows His own purposes to cleanse Job until he comes forth as gold (Job 23:8-10).
Rather than joining the skeptics who find fault with God, we should take our cue from Job. Like every other person in Scripture who comes face to face with God, Job is crushed. His self-righteousness drains out. He does not rail against God. He humbles himself before the Sovereign Creator of the universe.
The ultimate cure for pride is to see God face to face. All the suffering imaginable in this world cannot completely rid us of it.
As Scripture tells us in I John 3:2: “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.”
My challenge: If you are a believer, trusting in Jesus Christ for forgiveness of sins through His death on the cross, your standing as God’s child is secure. Your future final sanctification is secure but it is not yet complete. Press on to know Him. Hunger and thirst for righteousness. Remember He will complete the work He has begun in you.
Tomorrow’s reading: Job 42:1-Psalm 7:17
