Today’s reading: 2 Chronicles 1:1-5:1

My selection: 2 Chronicles 5:1

Thus all the work that Solomon did for the house of the Lord was finished. And Solomon brought in the things that David his father had dedicated, and stored the silver, the gold, and all the vessels in the treasuries of the house of God.

My reflections: At the time of completing the temple, perhaps Solomon had the words from Proverbs 13:19 in mind: A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul.... Finishing a long, difficult project like the building of the temple must have brought great joy to Solomon. It had begun in his father David’s mind. David prepared Solomon for the task, but Solomon had to see it through. Even today, nearly three thousand  years later, it is not hard to sense the excitement that this brought.

Solomon was a starter and a finisher.  Some of us are better at starting than at finishing. We are the ones who leave a trail of half-completed projects behind as we move on to the next thing. Some of us are better at finishing than starting. We are the ones who weigh the cost of finishing and find it difficult to start since it will have to be carried through to the end.

My challenge: Is there an important task or project that you have left un-started or unfinished? Learn the sweetness of starting and finishing what God has called you to do– things which bring glory to Him and which will endure beyond your own life.

Tomorrow’s reading: 2 Chronicles 5:2-7:22
