The Fear of God in Prayer

Writer's picture: jacarroll71jacarroll71

Today’s reading: Deuteronomy 3:12-5:33

My selection: Deuteronomy 5:24

24 And you said, ‘Behold, the Lord our God has shown us his glory and greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire. This day we have seen God speak with man and man still live.

My reflections: The heads of the tribes of Israel expressed a true view of God. They recognized that what had occurred at Mt. Sinai was a unique event: they had seen the glory and greatness of God. God had spoken to them, yet they had lived. They did not miss the significance nor the fact that to survive an encounter with God was not an every day thing. They lived to tell about it.

God is a God to be feared. People today have largely lost this view. What seems to be the common view now is: either God does not exist or, if He does, He exists to make us happy. The heads of the tribes got this right as God confirmed in verse 28.

My challenge: Do you fear God? If He is not a God to be feared, He is not a God of power. If He is not a God of power, your prayers are futile. There is little difference, practically speaking, between a weak god and no god. We pray to Him because He is powerful but also because through Christ we are welcome to bring our petitions to Him.

Pray but fear God, too.

Tomorrow’s reading: Deuteronomy 6:1-9:6
