30 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord God: Will you defile yourselves after the manner of your fathers and go whoring after their detestable things? 31 When you present your gifts and offer up your children in fire, you defile yourselves with all your idols to this day. And shall I be inquired of by you, O house of Israel? As I live, declares the Lord God, I will not be inquired of by you. 32 “What is in your mind shall never happen—the thought, ‘Let us be like the nations, like the tribes of the countries, and worship wood and stone.’
My reflections: The elders of Israel came to the prophet Ezekiel “to inquire of the Lord” (20:1). God flatly refused to be used by the hypocritical leaders whose hearts were still bent on idolatry. They wanted to be like the pagan nations while still have all the advantages of getting things from the true and living God of Israel.
My challenge: We cannot have the “best of both worlds”, that is, to be seen as hip and popular in the culture of the day as well as faithful to the Lord God of the Bible. God calls us to be a “people for His own possession” or as the King James Version puts it “a peculiar people” (I Peter 2:9). Be faithful to God’s word and His commands, even if you end up looking “peculiar”.
