Today’s reading: Isaiah 61:1-65:25

My selection: Isaiah 65:23-24

23 They shall not labor in vain

or bear children for calamity,

for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the Lord,

and their descendants with them.

24 Before they call I will answer;

while they are yet speaking I will hear..

My reflections: Here Isaiah describes some of the glories that God will create in the new heavens and earth, or the New Jerusalem: vitality, prosperity, and security. That new world will be a joy and her people will be a gladness (vs. 18). They will labor productively. They will be the offspring of the “blessed of the Lord,” Jesus Christ. Their children, too, will be His descendents. Thus, families will be united in Him. God will answer them before they call. They will lack nothing from God’s hand.

What a glorious picture of God’s tender mercies and loving plans for His people!

My challenge: Does your heart long for the New Jerusalem to come? Do you long for your loved ones to be united around Christ? Trust Him to bring this all about in His time and in His way. He is able to fulfill His every promise. You are a pilgrim in this land. Do not be too attached to it.

Tomorrow’s reading: Isaiah 66:1-Jeremiah 3:5
