Today’s reading: Proverbs 19:1-21:31
My selection: Proverbs 19:11
Good sense makes one slow to anger,
and it is his glory to overlook an offense.
My reflections: A hothead (one quick to explode at the first sign of provocation) does not demonstrate good sense. In fact, one who restrains his anger AND even overlooks an offense is seen as a glorious person.
My father, who served as a sergeant in the US Army in WWII, said you could usually tell an officer’s rank by his attitude. The higher the rank, the more humble the attitude. They were not the captains, majors, colonels, and generals who were blowing their tops, but the second lieutenants, the lowest-ranked officers. The enlisted men, consequently, often admired the higher ranking officers but resented the arrogance of the lower ranking ones.
My challenge: Do you overlook offenses committed toward you? Do you restrain your anger? James repeated this principle in his epistle:
Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness that God requires. James 1:19-20
Show good sense. Let God’s glory shine from your life, seek to overlook offenses as much as possible.
