Today’s reading: 1 Chronicles 14:1-16:43
My selection: I Chronicles 16:43
Then all the people departed each to his house, and David went home to bless his household.
.My reflections:
David was doing a good job as a military leader, governor, and administrator of a vibrant priesthood in Israel. He utilized his position not to attempt to usurp the position of the Levites and priests but to insure that they were well organized and were admonished to keep the law of God faithfully in the discharge of their tabernacle duties. After bringing the ark to the City of David, getting it in place, organizing the work of the tabernacle and giving praise to God, David went to his home to bless his household.
Leaders whether in the church or in the spheres of government and commerce must not forget their families.
Wives and children are easily neglected by those men who spend most of their time dealing with great, public matters. It is easy for such men to relax at home and forget that their families need a husband and father just like any other family. It is easy for them to feel that they are spent and have nothing to give at home. It is easy for them to come home wanting to receive more than to give. If this is the case, they will need to reserve some energy for their ministry on the home front lest their wives and children be bitter and resentful.
My challenge: Are you a leader who struggles to have enough energy at the end of the day to come home and bless your family? What changes do you need to make to be able to do that? Are you the wife or child of a man who seems to give his best at work and has little reserve for you? How can you pray for him and encourage him to make his family ministry more of a priority? Husbands and fathers, take care of your wives and children. No one else can be husband and father to them.
Tomorrow’s reading: 1 Chronicles 17:1-20:8
