Today’s reading: Jeremiah 30:1-31:40

My selection: Jeremiah 31:33-34

33 But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 34 And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

My reflections: God promised to make a new covenant with His people. That new covenant would bring deliverance, not just from political slavery in Egypt as in the old covenant, but from spiritual slavery to sin and guilt. Under the new covenant, God’s people would be changed on the inside. The law would be in their hearts. God would be their God. They would be His own people. They would know Him. He would forgive them.

All this was fulfilled in Jesus Christ. In Him, we are new covenant people. We stand before Him. He gives us His Spirit to live in us. Although we are not yet perfect, a new era has begun, an era which will culminate upon Christ’s return (Philippians 1:6).

My challenge: Be encouraged today in God’s new covenant, if you are His. Your are forgiven, adopted, and sanctified before Him. Bear the fruit of confident joy in Him.

Tomorrow’s reading: Jeremiah 32:1-34:7
