Warnings to Church Leaders

Today’s reading: Matthew 23:1-24:51

My selection: Matthew 23:1-3

Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, 2 “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat, 3 so practice and observe whatever they tell you— but not what they do. For they preach, but do not practice.

My reflections: In these two chapters, Jesus prepares His disciples for the difficulties ahead of them: corrupt religious authorities and political opposition. It is not a bright picture, but it is a true one. It is important that those who will be the apostles of His Church are forewarned and prepared.

Interestingly, Jesus tells them that the teaching of the scribes and Pharisees should be obeyed. The problem of the scribes and Pharisees is not their teaching but their practice. They teach one thing, but do another. They do what they do for show, to impress others.

Leaders, to be faithful to Christ, must serve. Christian leaders must do what they tell others to do. Christian leaders must assume a humble attitude, not with the goal of impressing others or of receiving titles and honors.

My challenge: Jesus was the ultimate example of godly leadership. He served others unto death. In your leading, serve others humbly for Christ’s sake without thought of reward or honors.

Tomorrow’s reading: Matthew 25:1-26:35
