Today’s reading: 2 Samuel 22:1-23:39

My selection: II Samuel 23:2-4

“ The Spirit of the Lord speaks by me;

his word is on my tongue.

3 The God of Israel has spoken;

the Rock of Israel has said to me:

When one rules justly over men,

ruling in the fear of God,

4 he dawns on them like the morning light,

like the sun shining forth on a cloudless morning,

like rain that makes grass to sprout from the earth.

My reflections: Here David shows an awareness that he spoke words that were inspired by the Spirit of the Lord. This is an Old Testament reflection of what Peter would later write:

For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit. II Peter 1:21

This doctrine of verbal inspiration of the Scripture is crucial to the faith of reformed and evangelical Christians. It is based in the Bible’s own claims about itself. It began with the earliest books of the Bible, the Pentateuch, but continues throughout the Bible. We dare not ignore, belittle, or replace the Scripture. It is God-breathed (II Timothy 3:16-17). The Church received it and did not create it as the Roman Catholic Church claims. Believers and unbelievers alike stand under its pronouncements and judgments. God’s Word brings us comfort and fear.

My challenge: What is your view of the authority of the Bible? Do you take it as given by God and, thus, supreme over every other book? Do you tremble at His Word (Isaiah 66:2)? Do you trust what He has said over human reasoning and wisdom? Do you look to His Word as the basis for your life and faith?

Thank God today for revealing Himself to mankind through His Word. Think about how His promises and commands both anchor and charge you in your life.

Tomorrow’s reading: 2 Samuel 24:1-1 Kings 2:12
